Short answer: To show up in ChatGPT, your website should be readable by AI search tools, say plainly what you do and for whom, and ideally be mentioned on other trusted sites. There’s no ranking dial to turn and no one can guarantee a mention. AI assistants recommend businesses they can read, understand and trust.
This is often called AI SEO or AI search optimization. Most of it is good SEO done well. Here are seven steps, in order.
1. Make sure AI can read your website
If your content only appears after scripts run, some crawlers and fetchers may not see it. Google renders JavaScript, but not every bot does.
Check: in Chrome, turn off JavaScript for your site (Settings → Privacy and security → Site settings → JavaScript) and reload. If your services, prices or phone number disappear, some AI crawlers may not see them either. This is a rough check, not proof of what any one AI tool sees. Turn JavaScript back on after.
2. Don’t block AI crawlers by accident
Open yoursite.com/robots.txt. Look for “Disallow” lines under these names. Each one does a different job: OAI-SearchBot decides whether you can appear in ChatGPT search. GPTBot is OpenAI’s training crawler, separate from search. PerplexityBot is Perplexity’s search crawler. Google-Extended controls use of your content for Google’s AI models. Security plugins, firewalls and hosting settings can also block bots, so check those too.
If you want to appear in ChatGPT search, allow OAI-SearchBot. You can block GPTBot (training) and still allow OAI-SearchBot (search). Note that robots.txt is a request, not a lock, and fetches a user triggers inside ChatGPT may not follow it.
3. Say what you do in the first two sentences
Clear sentences are easier for people and machines to understand than slogans. The top of each page should say what you offer, where, and for whom.
Instead of: “Comfort you can count on.” Write: “We install and repair heating and air conditioning in Phoenix, for homes and small businesses.”
4. Answer real questions on your pages
People ask AI full questions: “Who installs heat pumps near me?” “How much does a new AC cost?” Pages that answer those questions directly are easier to understand. That helps, but it doesn’t guarantee a mention.
Add a short FAQ to each service page. Keep each answer to one or two sentences.
5. Add structured data
Structured data (schema) gives search engines and other systems that read it clear labels for what a page is: a business, a service, an FAQ, an article. On WordPress, plugins like Yoast add the basics. Check any page with Google’s Rich Results Test. It checks Google’s rich results, not ChatGPT.
6. Get mentioned on other sites
Being mentioned accurately on other trusted sites can help people and search systems trust you. AI companies don’t publish exactly how they weigh this. Keep your Google Business Profile complete, collect reviews, and get listed on the directories and industry sites in your field.
7. Keep your site fast and secure
Slow, broken or insecure sites hurt your visitors and can hurt you in Google. AI tools may use different signals, but a site that loads and works is the baseline. Check your pages on a phone with Google PageSpeed Insights, and make sure your site loads over HTTPS without warnings.

Is AI SEO different from regular SEO?
Mostly no. Google says its own AI features run on the same basics as Google Search: pages that load, say clearly what they’re about, and can be crawled. Other AI tools work differently, but the same basics are a good start. The difference is that AI answers in sentences, so plain, direct answers on your pages matter more.
There’s also no guarantee. No one can promise a ChatGPT mention, and anyone who does is guessing. You can only make your site easy to read, understand and trust.
Being found is half the job
Once AI sends people to your site, your pages still have to turn them into leads, and your tracking has to count them. If you also run ads, start with the Meta Pixel Helper guide to check what’s being counted. Want to know how much depends on your site? See what a conversion tracking audit is.
FAQ
How do I rank in ChatGPT? Allow OAI-SearchBot, make sure your content shows without scripts, state clearly what you do on every page, add structured data, and get mentioned on other trusted sites. None of these guarantees a mention.
Should I block AI crawlers? Decide bot by bot. To appear in ChatGPT search, allow OAI-SearchBot. You can block GPTBot if you don’t want your content used for training. For private content, use a password, not robots.txt.
Does schema help with AI search? It gives search engines clear labels for what a page is about, especially Google. Whether ChatGPT uses it isn’t published, and it doesn’t guarantee a mention.
How long does it take to show up in ChatGPT? There’s no fixed timeline. It depends on the tool, whether its crawler can reach your site, and the question being asked. OpenAI says robots.txt changes take about 24 hours to reach ChatGPT search.
